Avebury Stone II
Avebury Stone II

This painting inspired writer, art critic and curator Andrew Lambirth to write the following poem:

  •         The Stones are Exploding
    (for Laura Barnard)

The stones are exploding their confines
    Effervescing into plumes of coloured
    Vapour and sacred fire, lighting
    The air with fairground finery:

Big Dipper, Waltzer and Ferris Wheel,
    Henry Moore on hallucinogens,
They burst out of their land-locked
    Identities for one night only

Taking with them our hopes and doubts
    The freight of human responsibility
Dispersed in a great outpouring of energy
The last of the great pagan redemptions

As we, humbled in our pettiness, absorb
The healing colour and light, marvel at
    The Earth’s fire-works and imagine
Ourselves, for once, wholly free of care.
